Intro to Machine Sewing for Beginners

One-time class to set you up for using basic stitches on a sewing machine.

Price includes all necessary materials and access to a sewing machine.

Minimum of 2 students required for the class to run. Otherwise, the class will be canceled, and tuition refunded.

If none of the current group options work for you, we also offer private lessons at $75 per 1.5 hours, depending on our availability.

Learn how to create the All The Things Tote by Knot & Thread with guidance from skilled and fun instructor Maria. In this class, you’ll construct this perfectly sized, versatile tote step by step.

The pattern includes three sizes; we will be making the Medium size option in class.

Class Fee: $95

The class fee does not include fabric, pattern, or Soft & Stable.

You’re welcome to bring your own fabric, or purchase supplies at Scientist Quilter Studio.
We offer 10% off class materials purchased at the studio.

We Will Provide

  • Sewing machines (first come, first served)

  • Rotary cutters

  • Pins

  • Fabric clips

  • Seam rippers

  • Stilettos

  • Fabric scissors

  • Small sharp scissors with a point

  • Tailor’s chalk (for dark fabrics)

  • Disappearing ink pens for marking

  • 90/14 sewing machine needles

Please Bring to Class

  • Optional: Your own sewing machine and walking foot

  • Personal fabric scissors (if preferred)

  • 50 wt cotton thread to match your project

  • Bobbins — please wind at least three bobbins with your project thread prior to class

The remaining balance is due on the first day of class.

Learn how to repair clothing and textiles in a creative way, adding visual interest, personality, or even transforming a garment into something more beautiful or meaningful. Learn and practice techniques such as Sashiko stitching and patchwork applique. We’ll guide you through the process step-by-step. No sewing experience is necessary – just bring your creativity and a garment of your choice!
